WHAT IS UMAMUSUME?

Announced in 2016, the Umamusume Project is project by the Japanese company Cygames, known for their popular mobile games. The project games to honour the legacies of real-life racehorses through reimagining them as horse girls (Umamusume) with their careers, stories, and rivals reflecting their real-life counterparts.

Umamusume are anthropomorphized females with the ears, tail & abilities of actual horses. The Umamusume themselves reflect their real-life counterparts in aspects such as their personality, attire, relationships, and gender. With their personalities based on their behaviour such Gold Ship and their unpredictable nature. Their attires matching the colour of their jockey’s colour. Their relationships matching with the Umas bonding with the real-life relatives and rivals. Their gender indicated by which ear they have an accessory on, right side for stallions (male), left side for mares (female), or in a rare occasion such as with Fine Motion, an ear accessory on both ears due to being intersex.

Umamusume is set in a world similar to that of our own, with the only difference being the existence of Umamusume (Umas for short). They are reincarnations of their real-life counterparts from our world. The Umas attend various schools which specialise in racing, such as the primary location for the series, Tracen Academy. themselves strive to race against one another with their victories and defeats being the same as their real-life counterparts. After a race finishes the Umas perform songs as idols.

Cygames obtain the licenses for the use of the horses likeness from the owners or associations of real-life racehorses to bring them in life within the Umamusume Project
